A Quick Update Before My Lunchbreak Ends and I Go Back to My Dayjob

March 29, 2012

I’ve gotten a lot of notes requesting updates on when the OVA episodes will be coming out, and whether I’ve acquired the movie to work on, so since time is limited I’ll try and address this all at once.

I wish I could say that a combination of injury and illness have incapacitated me this entire time, but that’s only been for the last five weeks.  The truth is, I’m only human, and I’m sorry to say I keep my life too crazy to be reliable about any of my hobbies.  Working a full time corporate job with over an hour of commute each way while trying to break into a career as a professional writer will do that to you.  Having the computer that is the mainstay of your digital life wear out beyond repair will make it worse — and yes, dealing with a back spasm that kept me from moving my head five weeks ago made it functionally impossible.  That will continue to require attention for an undetermined amount of time to come, but I’m glad to say I’m now doing much better.  Alas, the doctor visits mean I can’t afford to buy imported DVDs or computers if I want to eat, so I don’t have the movie DVD as of yet.

Here’s what I do have:

Two translated scripts are finished.  The third is nearly finished with revisions, but I’m not ashamed to say that Chitose’s accent and dialect are kicking my ass to hell and back.  The fourth episode and the second omake are done with the first pass translation, but I haven’t started revisions.

Lia-san very kindly stepped up and finished timing the first episode, since my computer is limping along, unable to process data fast enough to play back audio and video at the same speed.  I’ll be typesetting it as soon as I have a chance to take care of the most annoying problem that’s been plaguing these releases.  That being…

As I’m sure you all know by now, MegaUpload is gone, and many of my MediaFire links won’t work because their server has been deleting my files.  The torrent tracker I was using has likewise long since bit the proverbial dust, and I don’t think the mirror is working properly anymore.  So, I’m researching other torrent sites to see where I can seed releases, and more importantly, where I want to seed releases (based on how likely the site looks to fold, and various net-safety concerns).  I probably won’t be able to link direct downloads anymore, period.

Finally, since Crunchyroll has licensed the Shin Tennis no Oujisama series (as Prince of Tennis II), the Ano Toki no Bokura OVA and the new movie, along with the translation for Junjou that I’ve promised to Ikemen, will be my last regular releases as a fansubber (as clumsy and unreliable as my term has been).  Anything I decide to do from here on will be purely because the whim takes me at the moment.

Thank you for your patience,

Skinner

I wasn’t able to get the quality I wanted on a WMV file, and those tended to have very low download numbers, so I’ll probably leave it off from now on.

MEGAUPLOAD SPECIAL NOTE: Since MegaUpload automatically streams videos on MegaVideo, and I can’t find a way to make it stop, I’ve messed with the file extensions so that these files aren’t recognized as videos. After you download them, just change the “_avi” or “_mp4” to “.avi” or “.mp4” and everything should be fine.

The two full-length episodes will be coming with all due speed, but in the meantime I hope you like the bonus features. In addition to the chibi gag story above, the disc also came with a promo for the feature length movie currently showing in theaters across Japan: “Showdown in England’s Tennis Fortress”.

And since I’ve already been asked, I should probably announce: Yes, I will be subtitling this movie when it’s available on DVD.

I mean… How could I not? I haven’t been able to stop laughing at the promo for days

New TeniPuri OVA Announced – Another Story II: Ano Toki no Bokura

April 12, 2011

Pre-orders from CDJapan show that the first disc of a new OVA, “Another Story II: Ano Toki no Bokura” will be released on August 26, 2011.

Yes, Skinner has ordered a copy.

She has, alas, been too crazy busy and full of insomnia to do any subtitling recently (counter to her wishes, being unable to sleep for over a month does not increase one’s ability to accomplish things), and that release date is very soon after her anticipated move to a new apartment that she has not yet found so no one can make any promises for our subtitling schedule being any clearer…

But of course we want to subtitle it.

We’ll see.

You will probably get new, subtitled TeniPuri in September.

“Kimi no Tameni Dekiru Koto” [PV by Gackt]

January 28, 2011

This wasn’t the video I had intended to subtitle next, but I needed the translation for something, and I figured that as long as I had it, I’d share.

As a sidenote, I was particularly impressed with Gackt’s eyes in this video.

Public Service Announcement: Holyland (by Ikemen Subbing)

November 16, 2010

As you may or may not know, our translator (Skinner) also works with the J-Drama fansubbing group, Ikemen Subbing. Being very excited about her first project with them, she wanted to make the following little announcement: Holyland is now finished!

What this means for you:

1) An excellent series is available in its entirety, should you choose to watch it. All the translated episodes are available on the D-Addicts tracker as well as on the Ikemen Subbing LiveJournal Community (membership required to see downloads). [Recommended with the following caveat: This show is about a young man who becomes a street fighter while dealing with life-crushing bullying and gang violence. It does contain several graphic fight scenes.]

2) After November (read: NaNoWriMo) is over, Skinner will be finishing translation on the Prince of Tennis “Message in a Bottle” special and her two super-secret Prince of Tennis side projects, one of which is no longer a secret. Please look for them with only a modicum of delay.

Unrelated to Holyland, Skinner has also upgraded her typesetting skills and is very excited to start producing prettier subs for all the adoring fans of Prince of Tennis (and everything else we do) out there.

“Redemption” [PV by Gackt]

August 18, 2010

The last of the songs prepped for the “Subtitles for Newbies” panels, and a bit of an experiment for me as far as typesetting goes. Instead of typesetting this myself on stage, I asked for a brave volunteer from the audience to give it a five-minute go (sidenote: not nearly enough time for refining and tweaking, just for allowing someone to practice picking a font, a color, and setting it to a line). Given that this song has a lot of personality to it, I decided when making my own typesetting scheme to mess around with some of the more interesting transformations possible in the Advanced SubStation Alpha subtitle format: real karaoke timing on English lyrics, a couple fades, one or two things that move. My wonderful beta, Sumeria, verified that I did not go overboard, so rest assured — it’s not a pinwheeling carnival of unreadable text. That would be a crime against J-Rock.

So, please enjoy a video from the man who may well have the best voice of all the J-Rock and J-Pop acts I follow.

“With You” by Kimeru [PV]

August 17, 2010

I have an awful tendency to get this song stuck in my head, so it topped the list of videos pulled off my Kimeru collection. For those of you familiar with Prince of Tennis, especially the musicals, this is the artist responsible for the songs “You got game?” and “Make You Free”, and who played Fuji Syuusuke in the first Seigaku musical cast.

“Everything” by Arashi

August 15, 2010

Ever since I had to abandon my YouTube account, I been concentrating on things other than music videos, which has put me five singles behind Arashi’s releases. However, I made three music video translations for the purpose of having something to present during the fansub panel at Otakon. “Everything”, “With You” (by Kimeru), and “Redemption” (by Gackt) were translated and timed in the week before the convention, and were typeset on stage as demonstration pieces. Now that con recovery is mostly over, I’m checking and encoding them. Please look for Kime-pants’s adorably terrible English tomorrow. For now…

Panels Approved for Otakon 17!

June 23, 2010

Word is in from the panel Selection Committee! Given the large number of panels submitted to Otakon 17 (July 30-August 1), I’m pleased to announce that the various members of Impetuosity Productions have had 2.5 panels approved for this year.

[begin shameless plug]

“The Phenomenology of Ikari Shinji” has been picked up again, as well as one of our new submissions, “Subtitles for Newbies”. One of our other new submissions, “Socks and Bandages: How to Look Like a Boy”, has been added to the Wait List. Of course, we will also have a table in the Artist’s Alley where Sumeria will have prints of her work available and I will (apparently) be doing calligraphy on silk by commission. This wasn’t expected, but it seems to be the case. We’ll be at Table H01, right by the exit. Unless I’m mistaken, this is very nearly the same location we’ve had every year we’ve had a table at Otakon.

Official summaries of these and our other panels are available on our Panels page. If you’re planning to come to Otakon, we hope to see you there.

Panel Update — “Charisma”

May 17, 2010

We’ve received word from the Otakon staff that we should hear by June 18th what panels (if any) we submitted for this year were accepted. In the meantime, I’m doing research and planning for one of the panels we’re putting together for beta later this year and for convention use next year: “Charisma: The Uke as the Center of Attention”.

I thought I’d get some input from the gallery as to what characters would make interesting examples. I’ve posted a poll on my LiveJournal, which I am reposting here.

Please note: these questions apply to characters that are portrayed as ukes both in the canon works and in fanworks. We’re working with a very particular character quality that causes a character to be viewed in an uke position by fandom, and a character’s existence on this list is not equivalent to an assertion that this character is the uke in a canon yaoi relationship. Any commentary about how so-and-so is not actually an uke will be ignored (or deleted, if it proves to be inflammatory).

If you want to vote but aren’t sure you understand the poll, please comment and I’ll be happy to answer any questions.

Thank you for your opinions! Even if you pick from the lists here, please feel free to include other options in your comments.
